Welcome to the Dominican Republic – one step and you are home

Tourism is booming in the Dominican Republic, and so is construction of second homes for people from northerly climes. In the seacoast gated enclaves, an insular bubble of luxury far from the trouble spots, villas and condominiums are selling fast.

But the big attraction is the combination of classic Caribbean assets – “the people are beautiful, the ocean is beautiful, the weather is beautiful.” And you can be a king in the Dominican for very little money

The Dominican Republic covers the eastern two-thirds of the island of Hispaniola. The capital city is Santo Domingo, located on the south coast of the island. Since 2002, the nation's economy has shown a steady downward trend. Tourist facilities vary according to price and location. English is widely spoken in major cities and tourist areas, but outside these areas it is often difficult to find English speakers.

A few more facts:

The Dominican Republic (Spanish: República Dominicana, is a Latin American country located in the Greater Antilles archipelago on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola. It shares the island with the Republic of Haiti, making Hispaniola one of two Caribbean islands that are split by two countries; the other is Saint-Martin/Sint Maarten Hispaniola is the second-largest of the Greater Antilles, and lies west of Puerto Rico and east of Cuba and Jamaica.

The Dominican Republic is the site of the first permanent European settlement in the Americas, its capital Santo Domingo. It has the first cathedral and university, as well as the first European-built road and fortress in the Americas. Santo Domingo (originally New Isabella) was also the first colonial capital in the Americas.

For most of its independent history, the nation experienced political turmoil and unrest, suffering through many non-representative and tyrannical governments. However, since the death of military dictator Rafael Leónidas Trujillo in 1961, the Dominican Republic has moved toward representative democracy.
